About

The Old Capitol Chorus is Iowa City's local barbershop chorus and has been around for over 55 years.  We sing a cappella music, primarily barbershop.  We love to sing for all types of events in the Corridor area and do several performances a year of different types, including our big annual show, fund raisers for different groups, church services, large multi-group events, and small concerts for different living communities.

We are directed by Chad Knipfer. Chad has been an active barbershopper for 23 years, having sung in numerous quartets and directed various choruses. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 2003 from Doane University, under the direction and mentorship of a previous Old Capitol Chorus director, Larry Monson. Chad loves a capella music and sharing his knowledge with men of all walks of life, ages, and abilities. Music plays such an important part in a positive way of life and he hopes others can feed their souls through hard work and success in creating wonderful sounds with others with the same goals. He's very excited for what the future of OCC has in store for its members and enjoys sharing our journey throughout our community.

The chorus is part of The Central States District, a five state district with over 50 choruses, and often competes in district competitions that are held all over the district.  We have won the district at different plateau levels 5 times 1983, 1987, 1995, 1996, and 2014.

We are a fun group of guys that loves to sing together and improve to be the best singers we can be and perform for lots of audiences.
